Using cardboard boxes as cribs to put babies to sleep is gaining popularity, all because they can help prevent sudden death among newborns while they sleep.

Baby Box Co., a company based in Los Angeles, is partnering with different hospitals in the United States to give new parents these boxes that come with their respective mattress and contain gifts for their baby valued at rometen to see an educational video that lasts fifteen minutes.

The video, which can be viewed online, gives them advice on how to avoid sudden death in their newborns. Among those tips are not to sleep with them in their beds, to help them sleep on their backs and not on their stomachs and not to put toys near them when they go to sleep - habits that have been linked to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in babies under one year.

This syndrome, also known as SIDS for its acronym in English, claimed the lives of some 3,700 babies in this country in 2015, according to the Center for Disease Control in the United States.

The idea of giving a box to future dads arose in Finland, the country where this program was launched in 1949 and the rate of infant mortality was drastically reduced.

Now the United States wants to follow in its footsteps, and in January New Jersey became the first state to adopt it, distributing 105,000 baby boxes. Hospitals in Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania have recently joined the initiative.

The boxes themselves are not some kind of "lifeguard" for children. "We really don't think this in itself is going to stop infant sleep-related deaths," said Celina Cunana, one of the founders of the Babies Need Boxes program in Ohio. "But it is a way we have to give parents the education and tools to reduce the odds (of this happening), to help them succeed."
