Tom Brady and the New England Patriots' impressive victory against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI featured a special witness for the quarterback, who was also the MVP of the game.

The 39-year-old, who made history by winning his fifth highest NFL trophy, is going through a tough family ordeal: His mother, Galynn Brady, has cancer.

The husband of the Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, with whom he has two young children, has kept his mother's illness in the private sphere and only mentioned it the week before the game held in Houston, TX.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft told the local Boston sports channel NESN about the situation his team star is going through.

"I talked to [Brady] in the locker room before the game and I said, 'We have to win this for your mom,' because I know how important her mother is," Kraft explained after the game.

"He is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, and this is the first game he attends," continued the businessman. "She came here, I saw her, and it was all very cool."

In remarks after the match, Brady, 39, dedicated the game to his mother, who was seen on the field after the victory wearing a headscarf.

The first time the athlete made reference to his mother's illness was a week ago, during a pre-Super Bowl press conference. The Californian admitted that the disease has been "difficult" for the family.

"I am just waiting for everyone to come this Sunday to share this great experience," said the athlete.
