Women's History Month may be over, but that doesn't mean our work highlighting kick-ass women is done. Women aren't given nearly enough credit for their incredible accomplishments and this is especially true for women of color, whose impact on the world is vital but not appreciated nearly so much as their white counterparts. That's why we're obsessed with “Central American Art,” a Twitter account started by 24-year-old Zaira Funes that aims to highlight the incredible things Latinxs from Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, and Belize have done. The account features women of every career and academic field, from athletes to activists, to singers and artists.
The account also shares photos and videos of Central American culture, as well as personal stories of Central American Latinxs and their experiences. In this way, the Twitter page serves as an altar to the beautiful accomplishments and rich culture that this area provides. It's so easy to overlook this region and lump all of these separate latin identities together, so we're glad there's a social media account shining light on the multifaceted world of Central America. By recognizing what makes each country so unique we're able to also see what connects us. Knowledge is power!
We love that for Women's Day the account chose to highlight some of the incredible stories and accomplishments of Central American women. From Olympic medal winning Tae Kwon Do fighters to labor organizers and civil rights activists, there's nothing women can't do.
We love living every day like it's Womens Day!
