Puerto Rico prepares to say goodbye to Walter Mercado. The famous astrologer died this Saturday, November 2, at the age of 87 as a result of kidney problems and, accordingly, family and friends want to say goodbye to his rank and figure.

Firstly, his body will be veiled on Wednesday the 6th at the Puerto Rico Memorial funeral home. According to the website of the funeral home located in San Juan, there will be a "Commemoration of Life" from 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The funeral will take place on Friday the 8th at El Señorial Cemetery. Memorial Park and Funeral Home.

“We were at his side for more than two weeks, morning, afternoon and night, like Willie Acosta and all the closest people. Apparently, Walter wanted to die alone and calm, because of avoiding more pain, perhaps,” Dannette Benet, one of the astrologer's nieces, explained to the local newspaper El Nuevo Día. “We were with him until the last moment and a few minutes after we left the room, he passed away. By this means, we are inviting all the people to join us at the funeral home and at the funeral, because Walter was from the town”

The health of the famous astrologer declined this summer after suffering a fall in the bathtub that caused fractures in his ribs, according to Ivonne Benet told People en Español.

“He was in pain but didn't go to a [medical] appointment. That's how she traveled [to Miami],”explained her niece. “We returned on August 8th. They analyzed him and found that he had suffered a fracture in his back and rib. It was very hard.”

This trip was in order for Mercado to attend the opening of the exhibition Much, Much Love: 50 Years by Walter Mercado, a tribute to his distinguished career that was installed at the History Miami Museum.

Walter Mercado has been a collaborator of People en Español -in its printed and online version- since its inception. Rest in peace.
