The Walmart store announced Tuesday that it will stop selling handguns, ammunition for pistols.

Walmart CEO Doug MacMillon released a statement openly announcing the changes that will take place following this year's mass shootings at Walmart stores in Mississippi and Texas that left 24 people dead.

Once the current inventory of ammunition and firearms is depleted, Walmart will stop carrying such products, according to the statement.

Although open transportation will be prohibited in the future, McMillon wrote that concealed firearms will be allowed if customers have the respective permits to carry weapons.

Upon exiting those areas of the firearms market, Walmart's share will decline from 20% to, at most, 9% of all ammunition sales.

“We will treat law-abiding clients with respect, and we will have a very low-key approach. We will respectfully request that they not carry. Discretion will be left to the store manager. If there is no imminent threat, the store manager may ask them to leave the gun in the vehicle for next time,”a Walmart spokesperson explained the company's new open transportation policy in a statement to Forbes.

If the customer is causing concern or fear with customers or associates, the store manager can approach the customer and / or follow the necessary protocols for a potential active shooter. In some states, open transportation is very common, so again, the store manager will be given some discretion.”

The National Rifle Association (NRA) issued a statement in response: "It is shameful to see Walmart succumb to pressure from anti-aircraft elites." The lines at Walmart will soon be replaced by lines at other retailers that are more supportive of America's fundamental freedoms.”

In response to Walmart's statement, the company's shares rose slightly, about 0.3%, on Tuesday afternoon.
