A young woman in a vegetative state gave birth to a baby at a care clinic in Arizona.

Phoenix police are investigating the case on allegations that the woman in a vegetable state was raped and had the child in December, the New York Times reports. Tommy Thompson, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, said the investigation is being conducted at the medical facility that provides long-term care for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Arizona Department of Health Services sent inspectors to facilities that are part of Hacienda Health Care. The woman has not yet been identified, the note says. In addition, a spokesperson for the Hacienda Health Care clinic, Dan Leibowitz explained that although due to federal and state patient privacy laws, the clinic cannot publicly discuss health information or a particular case, the clinic “has been and will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities and all relevant regulatory agencies on this matter.”

The New York Times explains Leibowitz indicated that a comprehensive internal review of patient safety and protocols is underway. The newspaper explains that according to federal records, the clinic has about 74 patient beds. Some patients have been there for decades, according to state records.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that in 2013, the Arizona Department of Health Services found that there was an employee, a man, who worked at the facility, who had mistreated some patients by making explicit sexual comments about them. The man was fired according to the note.
