An unusual incident sparked controversy at a California school after it emerged that a student had sprinkled his grandmother's ashes on cookies he brought to share with his classmates.
The alleged incident, which occurred at the Da Vinci Charter Academy in Davis, California, is under investigation. Neither the school nor the Davis School District have given details of what they believe exactly happened.
However, FOX40 reported that another student at the school, whose name remained anonymous, and his family went ahead to tell the news station about the cookies.
"This girl goes around telling everyone that she had brought these cookies to school with human ashes in them," the student told FOX40.
The Davis Police Department continues to investigate the incident, while Principal Tyler Millsap and the Davis Unified School District have not commented on it.
At least nine students ate the potentially contaminated batch of sugar cookies, although so far none have been reported with health problems.
Two students may be involved in making the cookies, which have not yet been proven to carry human remains.
"While we cannot comment on confidential student matters, I can tell you that the physical and socio-emotional safety of our students is our first priority," said a statement from the school district, according to FOX40.
“We take all allegations of wrongdoing seriously and conduct thorough investigations and involve the police when appropriate. When it is discovered that unlawful acts have been committed, disciplinary measures are applied and, at the same time, measures are taken to repair the damage within the community,”the statement said.
