The world was moved this Wednesday with the news of the death of Stephen Hawking. The famous British academic, researcher and author left this world at the age of 76 after a life tied to a wheelchair from which he explored the confines of the universe with his theories.
Dr. Hawking carried out revolutionary studies that in 1974 led him to publish his Hawking radiation theory, his most famous treatise, and which addressed the mysteries of black holes.
Hawking became a celebrity for his work, came to occupy an academic post that was once held by Isaac Isaac Newton, and received the Presidential Medal from former President Barack Obama (in 2009). He was also immortalized on The Simpsons (FOX) and appeared as a guest on the popular comedy Big Bang Theory.
But despite living paralyzed in much of his body since he was 21 years old - after being diagnosed with Lou Gherig's disease - the scientist had an intense love life that led him twice to the altar.
The first relationship emerged a few months before receiving the diagnosis, when he met Jane Wilde, a linguistics student at Cambridge University with whom he would marry in 1965. The couple had three children and their incredible relationship was portrayed in the movie The Theory. of Everything, from 2014 and that was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor to the also British Eddie Redmayne.
However, in 1990 the couple divorced, amid rumors that she was having an affair with the musician and that he was in love with the nurse who had cared for him for years.
This woman was Elaine Mason, the former wife of the man who installed the computerized speech system in Hawking's wheelchair and with whom he communicated. In 1995, the couple married, causing a gap between the academic and their three children.
In 2004 the Cambridge police carried out an investigation into the alleged abuse that the woman would have inflicted on Hawking, who ended up presenting burns to the body, cuts and blows. The investigation was closed because there were no formal charges against Mason. The couple finally separated in 2006.
Hawking's love life was proof that despite his prodigious mind, the scientist was never able to unravel the mysteries that women hold. That was made clear in an interview he gave to New Scientist magazine when asked what was the most sleep-depriving issue. "Women," replied Dr. Hawking. "They are a complete mystery."
