With Down Syndrome In Beauty Contest

Mikayla Holmgren, who suffers from Down syndrome, won the Spirit of Miss USA title last Sunday at the Miss Minnesota pageant.

Holmgren, 22, became a "pioneer or avant-garde" because she was the first young woman with Down syndrome to be part of the contest that selects a candidate who will later participate in Miss USA, Fox News reported.

It should be noted that beauty pageants are a way for Holmgren to demonstrate his talents. It is not the first time that this young woman stands on stage and faces a jury. Holmgren won the Minnesota Miss Amazing pageant for special needs youth.

In an interview he gave to People, he said that his intention when participating in the contest was to make known how those affected by the genetic disorder he suffers are. I want to show my personality. I want to show how my life looks, to be happy and joyful. I want to show what Down syndrome is,”he explained.

Did this young girl feel nervous when she went to enter the Miss Minnesota pageant? Apparently not. She simply said she was "super proud to have done it."

The young woman, who is a university student and loves dancing, assured that when she found out that she could participate, she was very happy. "I had a smile on my face," she told People. An interesting fact is that Holmgren told the KARE television station that she wanted to let the world know that her health problem did not define her as a person and that she could break schemes.
