In another sad case of the ravages of drug addiction in a family, Utah authorities are accusing parents of drugging their baby just hours after he was born in a Utah hospital.

As reported by the local CBS News affiliate, Dawn Christenson was consuming heavy doses of drugs during her pregnancy, which made her dependent on these substances when her little daughter was born in April. To cover that she had been born addicted, she and her husband, Colby Glade Wild, sprayed pills of Suboxone, a medicine used to alleviate the symptoms of addiction, and put them on her gums as they loaded her, practically in front of the nurses and doctors, who suspected nothing.

Traces of heroin and morphine were found in its tiny body in clinical studies of the small creature, but it is not known why its parents were not detained at the time. In fact, their incredible crime didn't come to light until these days, when their case came to a court in that state, after they were arrested for trying to rob a Walmart store on June 26.

Employees said Wilde, with her 2-month-old daughter in tow, took items from the shelf and tried to return them for a cash refund. When he was receiving it, some employees tried to question him, but he ran away. In his flight he dropped the infant, who was in a car seat. His wife, with their three children, was detained inside the store.

"This makes me sick to the stomach for a number of reasons," said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, a spokesman for the Utah County Sheriff's Department. "You have a baby who can't do anything on her own, and the people who should be providing her upbringing, love and care are the ones who are hurting her."

The two are now detained on charges of distributing controlled substances in a drug-free zone, possession of heroin, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, as well as for endangering a minor.
