The three men who last January raped a woman in Sweden and blatantly broadcast their crime on Facebook Live to a group of their friends, were sentenced Tuesday in court to serve prison terms and pay compensation to the victim.
The convicts, with ages ranging from 18 to 24 years, received different sentences. One will spend 27 months behind bars for the crime of rape and attend a rape. The other two were sentenced to one year in prison each, but apparently one of them will be reduced to six months for being a minor when he committed the crime.
Although the convicts have not been identified, the Reuters agency reported that two of them are Afghan citizens and a third is a Swedish citizen, of Afghan descent. All three were born between 1992 and 1998.
The crime that occurred in the city of Uppsala, about 50 miles from Stockholm, was broadcast live to a circle of friends of the rapists and shocked the country for the brutality of the scenes.
It was the same friends of the condemned who, seeing the shocking images, called the authorities to report what was happening. Police immediately went to the apartment where they were with the victim.
The men denied at trial the charges against them, arguing that the woman, in her 30s, had consented to have sex with them.
The prosecution maintained that the victim was taken advantage of for being heavily intoxicated under the effects of drugs and alcohol, and therefore was not able to consent to anything.
