The drug trafficker Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, who in 2015 surprised the world by escaping from a Mexican prison through a tunnel, is again behind bars in a federal prison in Manhattan, in New York, where there is no option for a similar escape.

In fact, after being extradited to the United States to stand trial, his life has radically changed. A twelve-story high-security building - protected with steel barricades and high-definition cameras - is the new home of the Mexican drug trafficker, a prison that has seen other famous inmates pass by like Wall Street swindler Bernie Madoff and John Gotti, former head of the Gambino crime family.

"You will not have access to anyone, just your lawyer," security expert Manuel Gómez told Telemundo, adding that anyone else who wants a hearing with Guzmán will have to submit to the scrutiny of the authorities.

According to a former prison guard, El Chapo would be on the tenth floor in a 20-by-12-foot cell where prisoners spend 23 hours a day unable to communicate with other inmates.

"It is not like in Mexico that the culture is different and unfortunately El Chapo can use his resources, his millions," adds Gómez. Measures have also been taken to ensure that the security guards guarding him in New York are not corrupted.

El Chapo, who has twice escaped from prison and been captured three times, faces charges brought by seven federal prosecutors in Texas, New York, Chicago and Miami.
