A 73-year-old man died in a California hospital after being beaten by another patient, PEOPLE reported. Police were called to College Medical Center in Long Beach on January 31 after being alerted to an attack that had happened at the hospital, the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement. Police found Francisco Sanchez-Reyes seriously injured and informed him that the attacker was a 37-year-old patient, Reginald Daniel Panthier, who was sharing the hospital room with the old man.

Francisco was rushed to another hospital in critical condition and died on February 9. After his death, his family created a GoFundMe account to raise money to pay for his funeral services.

On the GoFundMe page, her son Ramón shared a message about Francisco, who was due to return home after spending only one night in hospital. “A week ago my dad went to the hospital because he had a urinary infection, which he had had before. The hospital wanted to leave him overnight for some tests and rule out that he had ulcers. He was hospitalized on Friday morning at 5:30 am and was fully alert, expecting to return home possibly the next day."

However, on February 1, Ramón received an unexpected call from his sister, telling him to run to the hospital to see his father. Upon arrival they told him that a nurse had found his father lying on the floor bleeding. The patient who was in bed next to his father confessed to hitting him. Panthier was arrested and remains in jail on bail for bleeding brain. "They couldn't save him and he died a week later," wrote his son, who remembers him as "his teacher, his coach, and his mentor." According to Ramón, his father came to the United States from his native Mexico to provide a better future for his family. "He was the one who taught us about work ethic, respect and being a good human being," said his son. Francisco had 8 children, 24 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, according to his son Ramón told ABC 7. May he rest in peace.
