The murder of Kelly Owen, a 27-year-old mother studying nursing, has shaken the Long Island community. Police arrested her husband, from whom she had separated, in connection with the case. PEOPLE confirms that Michael Owen, 27, a former U. S. Navy sergeant, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife Jan. 15 at a South Farmingdale home in New York.
Stephen Fitzpatrick, the Nassau County Homicide Department detective, revealed that the couple had separated in 2008 after five years of marriage, but were still in a "physical and intimate" relationship. According to Fitzpatrick, Michael allegedly strangled Kelly after learning that she was pregnant. The couple already had a 6-year-old daughter together.
"He didn't want this baby," Fitzpatrick stated at a press conference. "He didn't want to give her her health insurance. He was involved in a new romantic relationship and was in a bad position. " Police allege that Michael was living with his new girlfriend when Kelly was killed.
The former navy sergeant is in jail without bail. Kelly was found dead in the house where she lived with her parents and brother. Her parents returned to the residence on January 15 at around 3:30 pm and found their car parked outside. Upon entering, they saw Kelly was not breathing and called 911. The coroner confirmed that Kelly died of suffocation and was pregnant. Rest in peace.
