The social crisis that migrant families are going through in the United States is becoming increasingly severe; particularly, now that the conditions in which children live after being separated from their parents have become known. However, many wonder if this kind of sacrifice is worth it.
Although it may seem contradictory, some people prefer to separate from their offspring, precisely, thinking about their benefit; since they are convinced that over time they will be able to meet again and in better economic circumstances.
"I am willing to sacrifice myself because I know that one day I will see them [their children] again," said María, a Salvadoran immigrant, to Univisión.
According to the CNN news network, the American Civil Liberties Union and other defense organizations warn that they have documented cases of parents who lost their children and have applied for asylum at ports of entry.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper El País, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported that since the authorization of the Attorney General of this nation, Jeff Sessions, he announced the policy of measures against immigrants, from last May until the June 15, about two thousand children have been separated from their parents.
"What we are doing as a country is causing enormous harm to these children and their parents, when it is totally unnecessary while they are waiting for their audience to obtain asylum," Jeff Merkley, a Democratic senator from Oregon, told the newspaper.
For its part, change.org has joined other campaigns for immigrants and launched a petition to prevent this family disintegration that is rapidly spreading internationally.
