Pennsylvania police reported that the suspect in murdering an elderly man and broadcasting the crime on Facebook Live on Sunday committed suicide after a brief police chase in that state.
According to Time magazine, Ryan Tarkowski, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Police, said Steve W. Stephens had been seen in Erie County on Tuesday morning. When authorities tried to confront him at a traffic stop, the 37-year-old committed suicide.
Stephens had unleashed an intense nationwide search after he allegedly shot 74-year-old Robert Godwin in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. Investigators believe Stephens selected his victim at random.
The causes that would have led Stephens to carry out the live broadcast of the murder are unknown. But it is believed that he would have argued with his girlfriend, due to the statements he makes in that video, even calling her a "bitch".
Likewise, details of his life have come to light that could have influenced his behavior. Despite working as a counselor helping youth develop job skills and find employment, he himself had filed for bankruptcy. He also confessed on Facebook that he had gambled large amounts of money and lost everything.
Federal authorities offered a $ 50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest, and shortly before his encounter with police in Pennsylvania, they had already received more than 400 notifications about his possible whereabouts.
