A South Carolina mother who last February allegedly killed her 4-year-old son by locking him in a refrigerator was released on bail out of jail on Friday after being released on bail pending trial.
Angela Blackwell was able to regain freedom after posting bail to stand trial and who had confessed to the facts.
According to local newspaper The Herald, defense attorneys argued that her client "had the mental capacity of a fourth-grade (elementary) child." They also indicated that there was no risk that she would escape because she has no money and expressed doubts about her alleged confession in what they called a tragedy.
Blackwell sobbed for most of the hearing, though he did not utter a word. Her partner and father of the deceased boy, Jeff Lewis, spoke in his favor, telling the judge that she was "a good mom." A family friend, Rhonda Doster, stated that "Angie does not have a fiber of violence within her."
In the period of time when the boy's death occurred, there were nine other people in the house.
The defendant has another 3-year-old son, who was removed from the home and is under the care of the authorities.
