There is a way to travel without leaving your home and it is through recreating traditional recipes. Such is the case of guava and cream cheese cakes that combine exquisitely sweet and salty.
Before preparing this delicious dessert with Caribbean roots, in about an hour, it is necessary to be clear about the two different types that exist: the triangular ones, which are guava and cheese, and the rectangular ones, which only have guava.
The New York Times recently shared a recipe for cupcakes taken from the book Paladares: Recipes from Private Restaurants, Homemade Kitchens, and Streets of Cuba by Anya von Bremzen, which we reproduce below.
INGREDIENTS
1 large egg
a pinch of salt
2 puff pastry sheets (about 8 ounces each)
Flour
1/2 cup of guava jam
¾ cup of softened cream cheese at room temperature
2 tablespoons of sugar
PREPARATION OF GUAGABA CAKES AND CREAM CHEESE
8 units
Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
Beat the egg with a pinch of salt and set aside.
In a bowl, combine the cream cheese with the 2 tablespoons of sugar.
On a flour-sprinkled surface, roll up the puff pastry sheets into 8 rectangles 3 inches wide and 4 long and place them on the baking sheet. Spread the guava paste and ½ tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture on top of the jam per puff pastry.
Fold one corner to the opposite corner to form eight triangles. Seal the triangles by closing them with the teeth of a fork.
Before baking, brush the top with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar. Bake the cupcakes until they are puffed and golden, about 15 minutes. Serve at the desired temperature.
