After a brief civil ceremony in Berlin, Germany, the first homosexual couple made up of Bodo Mende and Karl Kreile was officially united. This event had to its credit another historical fact, that the City Council decided to open its doors on a holiday, with the sole purpose of carrying out this marriage bond.

"We have finally stopped being a second-class couple," Bodo Mende told the press. "It is a good step forward, but the State must now continue the fight against homophobia and make international efforts to end the criminalization of homosexuality."

The gay marriage law was approved on June 30, due to an agreement between most of the political parties in this country. For her part, Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was on the campaign trail at the time and had disagreed with this proposal for a decade, asked MPs for a vote of conscience.

And despite the fact that 75 deputies from her party voted in favor, the president spoke out against her through her vote.

The entry into force of this new rule was from last Sunday, October 1. With this regulation, this nation has become the fifteenth in Europe to allow same-sex marriage.

In addition to Mende and Kreile, there were other couples very interested in legalizing their relationship, before this, the municipalities and civil registries of various cities in Germany were forced to function normally, despite being a holiday.
