Together as their life began, so did death find them. Twins Jean Haley and Martha Williams passed away Sunday after they fell outside the home of one of them in Barrington, Rhode Island.

According to the New York Post, authorities believe the 97-year-old women likely perished frozen in the cold temperatures after they were unable to get up after the fall.

The women were found by a neighbor outside the home of one of them around 8 a.m. on Sunday. Williams was found near her car and Haley inside the garage. Although both were transferred to the hospital, only their death could be certified there.

According to investigators, Williams may have fallen on the pavement while walking to his car at Haley's house. The two came from dinner with their 89-year-old younger sister.

Haley is believed to have tripped over a carpet on the garage floor while trying to enter the house to ask for help for her sister, Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said in a statement.

"On behalf of the men and women of the Barrington Police Department, our deepest condolences to the Haley and Williams families for their tragic loss," said LaCross.

Although Rhode Island health authorities have not yet been determined, the Post noted, the police chief's extremely low temperatures during Friday night may have been a factor, LaCross said.

Nothing was missing from the women's handbags, so investigators deduced that there was no criminal hand behind the tragic event.
