Eva Mendes has just been released as a designer. But, unlike celebrities like Jennifer López and Daisy Fuentes, who have clothing lines, the actress chose to create her own line of sheets and bed accessories. Recently, the actress of Cuban origin launched her “Vida by Eva Mendes” line, which is exclusively sold in Macy's stores.

The 34-year-old histrion had the collaboration of his partner and boyfriend of several years, George Augusto, to create these designs that are available to everyone.

Mendes spoke exclusively with People En Espanol.com about this collection that is inspired by his Latino culture.

Tell us about “Vida by Eva Mendes”

It is inspired by the things that my mom, my grandmother had, very feminine things, but that men also like because it reminds them of their childhood times. There is a bedspread called Rosa that has the emblem of an embroidered rose and I got that design from an old box of Cuban cigars. So I definitely use elements of my culture, the way I was raised.

Tell us a little bit about your origin.

My parents are Cuban, born and raised there. They came to the United States in the late 1950s. They had three children there; I was the only one who was born here. They came to Miami, where I was born, but then they moved to Los Angeles, which is where I grew up. I have the Cuban culture, I grew up eating suckling pig, old clothes, mince, tostones. I grew up in the typical setting where my parents spoke to me in Spanish and I responded to them in English. That's why I speak Spanglish so well (laughs). But, here in Los Angeles there are a lot of Mexicans, and I am also very close to the Mexican culture. And my boyfriend, George, is from Peruvian parents, that is, there is also a Peruvian influence and masculinity in this collection.

Why was creating a line within everyone's reach important to you?

We wanted to do something for people that is how I was as a child. We weren't poor, we weren't hungry, but we didn't have money for luxuries. The house was clean, but not pretty. Furniture did not match. We had a piece of furniture that maybe a friend had given us, a chair that someone else had given us, and so on. So, for me it is important to create designs for people with limited resources who want to have beautiful things, but who do not have much for luxury. But I did not want a cheap line, but accessible to the public, but of good quality.

Could we hope to see you someday with your own clothing line?

No, my passion is not in clothing. They offered it to me, but that's not my thing. My passion is to design for the house, to make life more pleasant for people in their homes. That is what excites me. I have always said that if I had not been an actress, I would have been an interior designer or architect. My boyfriend and I have already designed a few houses. We have destroyed houses that we have bought for ourselves and we have redesigned them together, both the architectural design and the decoration.

But if you have an impeccable style to dress, how do you do it?

The red carpet is my job, it's what I do and it's fun. But in my day to day I am a regular girl. I don't dress for paparazzi during the day. If they catch me, well, I don't care what I'm wearing. When I'm working, whether it's attending an event, or making a movie or a photo shoot, I give it 100 percent. I even involve my mom in that process, because she loves helping me choose what to wear. But, when I'm on vacation or on the street, I dress for myself.
