It was just a decade ago that Dr. Aliza Lifshitz appeared on People en Español's “25 Most Powerful Women” list.
The Mexican-born doctor began her career more than 40 years ago and has shared her knowledge through Dr. Aliza's office (Univisión Radio) and ¡Salud es vida … find out! (Univision).
A decade ago, the prominent internist and former health columnist for People en Español launched the VidaySalud.com project. Through this platform, which now broadcasts a program through the HITN network, the doctor reached out more than ever to the public to respond to the growing curiosity of Hispanics about health and everything that can make ours a life. healthier.
Coinciding with the anniversary of the platform, we chatted with Dr. Aliza:
You rose to fame on television and radio. How has this change been to the Internet and now with HITN?
It is very special because it is the only nonprofit television network in Spanish truly dedicated to the education, culture, and socioeconomic aspirations of Hispanics in the United States, and is currently found in 44 million households across [the country] and Puerto Rico.. That obviously greatly increased the amount of video and increased the TV show that we obviously love because it gives me a much bigger reach than the original [audience] platform.
What was the original idea when launching VidaySalud.com?
The idea was to provide people in a respectful and accessible way. Obviously without replacing your doctor. It was simply one more information tool. It arose because I have had the opportunity … both a doctor with my experience answering questions on the radio … television … magazines. What was happening is that people had many questions either because they did not have medical coverage or because they often go to health providers who do not speak their language or because the health system in this country is so dysfunctional that many times they can only see the doctor or healthcare provider for 10 or 15 minutes and have many questions left. It is a form that gives me great, great satisfaction to be able to help the public and it is part of the mission I have had to help the Hispanic community.
What are the topics or diseases most wanted by your audience in Vidaysalud?
Among the things that people are very curious about are nail fungus. People look for a lot of things related to mental health and sexual health. There are many myths, there are many doubts … there are many stigmas that are not spoken in our community. These are topics that are not discussed in the family. All the information we have on the site is free and above all: it is based on science. Even natural remedies, which we love in our community.
Is the information all for adults?
No, we also have information for teens. For everyone. We have over two million visitors a month. More than 6,000 medical topics, more than 1,000 videos. People come from the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain.
Are Hispanics more or less informed about health now?
I think the information is very poor. People need a lot of information. They need access to health services, awareness of the importance of being overweight, eating healthy and exercising more. We continue to have the problem of obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Excess weight leads to diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. Now we have fatty liver that affects many people. Excess weight can also be associated with certain types of cancer.
Are we changing as a society?
Society is changing. Moms work full time, but I think we have to start putting responsibility on dads. I think they have to have more responsibility at home and more responsibility with the children.
