Details about the extreme situation that the inhabitants of Puerto Rico live since the devastating passage of Hurricane Maria are increasingly evident and the testimonies that come from the island are not the most encouraging.

People en Español visited the San Jorge de San Juan Children's Hospital and some of its nurses spoke exclusively with us, sharing their dramatic testimonies about the situation of the inhabitants of Isla del Encanto.

"We have been through other hurricanes and [the island] has never been like this," they say, also assuring that one of the most worrying issues is of course the lack of food. "Now we eat canned food, rice and water is very scarce," they reveal, since a large amount of the meat and food supplies that must be kept refrigerated have been lost due to a lack of energy.

According to them, acquiring food and fuel is a task that can take hours, due to the endless lines. “I learned of people who have spent 10 hours in a gas station to be able to re more than two items of the same product.

Despite the fact that they feel lucky to still have a job, knowing that other people lost absolutely everything, they have also been forced to find ways to get food for themselves and their families. "Trucks pass by and in buckets [we collect it] or in the home of someone who has water," reveals one of them, who has not had access to drinking water for days.

Gloría and Emilio Estefan were also in the hospital and when they saw the difficult situation in which their workers find themselves, they decided to donate da and thus support the doctors, nurses and workers of this hospital.

Stars such as Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Nicky Jam and Chayanne joined the Estefans on a recent humanitarian visit to Puerto Rico, with the idea of bringing help and telling the world what the island is experiencing after Maria's passage.
