After the police identified the man who carried out a new terror attack in France on Thursday, this time on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées in Paris, details of his identity have begun to be released. Among these: the man had previously shot at police officers and had been sentenced to twelve years in prison.
The Guardian newspaper indicated that the gunman who killed one police officer and wounded two more in the center of the French capital was named Karim Cheurfi, he was 39 years old and had a long criminal record - which had led him to prison four times between 2001 and 2014. The crimes that led to his arrest include murder, robbery and violence, and it is believed that it was in these imprisonments that extremist supporters allegedly radicalized him.
Just a couple of months ago, in February, the police arrested Cheurfi after receiving reports that he had been talking about assaulting the Paris police. On that occasion, the authorities arrived at his home, where they found knives and masks, but they could not stop him because they considered that these articles did not constitute sufficient evidence.
On Thursday, at around 9 pm local time in Paris, Cheurfi arrived in the Avenue des Champs-Elysées in his car and unloaded his automatic weapon against two policemen who were traveling on foot in that area, killing one and injuring another.. He then fled and while running he managed to injure one more agent before other elements of public security shot him down with their weapons.
The man, born in a northern Paris suburb and who currently lived in the Chelles neighborhood with his mother, has been described by his neighbors as someone who "had lost his mind" and "hated the police and France."
The Islamic State terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack and French President François Hollande confirmed that all the clues point to a terrorist attack. The attack happens at a critical moment in France's politics: Presidential elections will take place on Sunday and political analysts have indicated that it would have a definitive effect on the ballot box.
