California Coronavirus Patient Serious

The California woman who tested positive for the coronavirus without having traveled outside of the United States is in a delicate state of health, according to Congressman John Garamendi. The Democratic politician confirmed to CNN that the woman is "serious" in a hospital in the north of the state.

Health authorities have not yet been able to establish how the infection occurred, since the patient says she did not travel outside the country and apparently did not have contact with someone who was infected.

Because of this, the Solano County Public Health Department declared a local state of emergency to investigate the cause of his illness.

"This appears to be a person who genuinely contracted the disease in the community," Health Department director Bela Matyas said at a press conference on Thursday, according to CNN.

For his part, Garamendi commented that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) should allow states to examine any suspected cases of coronavirus.

The California patient was the 15th person to receive a diagnosis of coronavirus in the United States, although the other cases have occurred in people who recently traveled to China or had contact with someone who traveled to that country.

The CDC announced Tuesday that Americans should prepare for the spread of the virus across the country, according to People.
