Two former New Mexico spa patients who underwent plasma or "vampire facial" treatment were diagnosed with HIV, state health officials said Monday.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, both clients "received injection-related procedures" at the now-closed VIP Spa in Albuquerque between May and September 2018.

The tests found that the women recently became infected with the same strain of the virus, "increasing the likelihood that the two HIV infections resulted from a procedure at the VIP Spa," according to the press release.

The establishment closed in September after a health inspection, offered "vampire facials," procedures in which plasma is drawn from the client's blood and then injected into the user's face.

The treatment gained popularity in 2013 when Kim Kardashian posted it on her Instagram account.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians (E!) Star received a vampire facial in 2013, but said the procedure was uncomfortable because she was pregnant with her daughter North at the time, and was unable to obtain the usual numbing treatments beforehand.. "Before I had the procedure, I found out I was pregnant, so I couldn't use a numbing cream or pain reliever and both are suggested," she said at the time. "It was very hard and painful for me."

The state Department of Health is offering free HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C testing for spa clients. So far, more than 100 clients have been evaluated, authorities said.
