The new law in Brunei that outrages gay men by stoning and radically punishes infidels causes outrage. Human rights organizations are trying to revoke the new law that would begin to apply soon in the Sultanate of Brunei in Asia. Celebrities like actor George Clooney also demand a boycott of this legislature that calls for people who are gay or adulterous to be stoned to death.
Although being gay is already considered illegal in this Islamic country, it will now be considered a capital crime. The radical and controversial law had been suspended for four years but will be put into effect again from Wednesday. It also punishes thieves by amputating a hand and foot.
A spokesman for the country's religious affairs ministry said they expected Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to officially announce the implementation of the new Sharia laws on April 3.
Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch warned that the implementation of the law "will quickly lead the country to pariah status of human rights with foreign investors, tourists and international agencies."
For his part, former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden said that stoning "people to death for homosexuality or adultery is appalling and immoral." Biden added: “Everyone in the world has the right to be treated with dignity and to live without fear. There is no excuse that is worth - neither culture nor tradition - for this type of hatred and lack of humanity”.
