This Wednesday, the sister of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands was found dead in her apartment in Buenos Aires and apparently killed herself.

According to the Argentine newspaper La Nación, it was a spokesman for the Government of the Netherlands who made the sad revelation. "It is presumed that it was suicide," he said.

According to the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant the queen is "in shock and devastated" by the death of her sister. Reports indicate that Inés suffered from depression and mental health problems.

The deceased is the younger sister of the 47-year-old sovereign, who was born in Buenos Aires. Until the moment of her death she worked in the Ministry of Social Development.

The first reports indicate that Zorreguieta died of suffocation as a consequence of her own hanging and according to some local media her mother, Doña María del Carmen Cerruti, was the one who found her dead. Sources also indicate that he suffered from anorexia and depression.

The deceased did not attend her sister's nuptials with the then Prince Willem-Alexander, held on February 22, 2002. However, Inés did attend the baptisms of her three nieces: Princesses Catharina, Alexia and Ariane.

Last summer, the queen and her family traveled to Buenos Aires for the funerals of her father, Jorge Horacio Zorreguieta, who was Secretary of Agriculture during the military dictatorship of controversial commander Jorge Rafael Videla (1976-1981).

Zorreguieta died at the age of 89 after fighting a battle against Hodgkin lymphoma.
