One woman died and 6 other people were injured in a shooting that occurred at a birthday party that was held this Sunday in San Diego, California.
According to various reports, around 6:00 pm, a subject entered the luxurious complex called La Jolla Crossroads, where the celebration was taking place, and opened fire on those attending. The New York Times noted that six of the victims were black and one of them was of Latino origin.
The gunman was a 46-year-old white man who went by the name of Peter Selis. The subject was shot dead at the scene when he wanted to reload the cartridge and pointed his weapon at the police officers who tried to stop him, the newspaper said.
"It was like a war zone or something," Amit Godbloe, a witness who heard the shooting from inside his apartment, told the San Diego Tribune newspaper. “There were like three or four shots, then a pause and more shots. I tried to count them. I counted 30 or 40”.
According to reports, a guest reported that at the party a person offered the triggerman a drink and food. He apparently turned down the offer and sat in one of the beach chairs at the foot of the pool minutes before opening fire.
Residents of the surrounding area shared videos in which the shots can be heard from a distance. The luxurious apartment complex is located near the University of San Diego and according to residents, it is a very quiet area.
A student at that institution, named Enzo Zhuang, who lives in an apartment overlooking the pool where the shooting occurred, told CNN that he was playing video games in his apartment when he heard an argument and minutes later he heard what looked like fireworks.
"I thought to myself who will have lit fireworks?" Said the young man. "It was always very peaceful here before this happened."
