The National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) of Venezuela announced the suspension of the signal from the CNN channel in Spanish in all cable companies operating in the country, alleging that said channel "distorts and defames the truth."
"It is made known to the public that on this date this National Telecommunications Commission (…) initiated a sanctioning administrative procedure and the consequential precautionary measures, by virtue of the transmission of the CNN signal in Spanish," it reads in the notice.
The suspension of the channel occurs after it broadcast a special program in which Vice President Tareck El Aissami is linked to the delivery of passports to Islamic extremism.
El Aissami's visa was suspended and his assets in the United States were frozen by the Treasury Department in Washington for his apparent links to drug trafficking and extremist movements in the Middle East.
"Such a procedure obeys the content that the aforementioned international news network has been disseminating in a systematic and reiterated way in the development of its daily programming, from which content that presumably constitutes direct aggressions against the peace and the democratic stability of our Venezuelan people, since they generate a climate of intolerance, "said Conatel.
In response, CNN in Spanish made available to Venezuelans a link to follow broadcasts through streaming.
President Nicolás Maduro, for his part, sent a television message highlighting the talent and goodwill of El Aissami for his fight against Colombian drug trafficking. In the message, he highlighted: "CNN is a manipulative means that wants to put the Donald Trump government against Venezuela."
