There is no doubt that stores like Kmart and Sears have been part of American culture for many years. The dozens of establishments around the country have made these stores the perfect place for customers to buy everything they need for their home and, of course, their family. But times have changed and stores that were once a symbol in this country have been disappearing. Unfortunately now it was the turn of these two for which 2017 was not a good year. As a result of low sales, both companies will close many of their stores.
Starting this January 12, Kmart will close the doors of 64 stores, while Sears will close about 39.
“We do not have the number of employees that will be impacted available. Most of these jobs are part-time positions,”said a Sears representative. "We will have the opportunity to apply for other positions at other Sears and Kmart stores."
Most of these stores will be closed by early April. Unfortunately Sears has been closing many more stores than other stores due to poor performance. For this reason, the company is focusing its growth efforts on its digital platform, which according to them is what customers prefer.
Macy's also recently announced it will close 11 of its locations. Other chains are also expected to announce that they will close some stores this month.
