The newly crowned Miss Teen USA, Karlie Hay, had her world turn upside down after tweets resurfaced of the young beauty queen using the N-word.
The 18-year-old from Texas, who was crowned on Saturday night, apologized for her racial slurs on her Instagram and Twitter accounts.
“Several years ago, I had many personal struggles and found myself in a place that is not representative of who I am as a person,” Hay wrote. “I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for. Through hard work, education and thanks in large part to the sisterhood that I have come to know through pageants, I am proud to say that I am today a better person.”
The Miss Universe organization responded to the controversy and confirmed that that they will not be taking away the crown.
“The language Karlie Hay used is unacceptable at any age and in no way reflects the values of The Miss Universe Organization,” reads a statement from Miss Universe, which runs the Miss Teen USA pageant. Karlie learned many lessons through those personal struggles that reshaped her life and values. We as an organization are committed to supporting her continued growth.”
Miss Teen USA 2010, Kamie Crawford, went to social media to share her opinions on the matter.
This controversy comes at the same time the pageant received criticism over the lack of diversity in their top five contestants, who all had blonde hair and light skin. Model Chrissy Teigen didn't shy away from expressing her thoughts on Twitter.
What do you think- should they have taken away the crown for Hay's racial slurs?
