A rape at Stanford University has been storming news headlines after the defendant received a sentence of six months jail time for a unanimous guilty verdict on three felony counts related to his assault of an unconscious woman. Here are the major points you need to know about the case:

1. In January 2015, a 23-year old woman was raped while unconscious on the Stanford University campus. Two men riding bicycles spotted the attacker Brock Turner on top of the woman, then ran and pinned him down until authorities arrived.

2. Turner, 20, was convicted in March 2016 of three counts of sexual assault: the intent to commit rape of an intoxicated / unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

3. The victim, who remains unnamed, released her 12-page final statement from open court to Buzzfeed News. "Even if the sentence is light, hopefully this will wake people up," she said.

4. The victim first learned all the details of her assault when she read about it in the news. “This was how I learned what happened to me, sitting at my desk reading the news at work,” she said in her statement.

5. Turner's father also released his final statement from court but sparked outrage for dismissing his son's crime as "20 minutes of action."

6. Santa Clara County Superior Judge Aaron Persky is under fire after sentencing Brock Turner to six months in county jail with probation. "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him," Persky said. "I think he will not be a danger to others."

7. More than 900,000 persons have signed a Change.org petition to recall Persky.

8. Stanford did release a statement informing the public that they did all they could in regards to the investigation, offered the young woman support and banned Turner from campus grounds.
