The short Cerdita, which can already be seen in theaters in the United States, crudely recounts the harassment and intimidation faced by a teenager martyred for her weight.

Its director, Carlota Pereda, spoke with People en Español about the message behind the film, which has garnered awards such as the Goya awarded by Spanish cinema, and its determination to tackle such a current issue.

How did the idea of shooting this short come up?

I had just become a mother and I was very afraid of the world my daughter was facing and here in Spain bullying increases by 43% a year. I was scared. One day when my mother-in-law was taking a nap with my girl, I saw in a swimming pool, where I made the short film, a teenage girl who went down alone at the same time every day. So I kept thinking, why did I do that?

What are you looking to tell this sad and tragic story?

Cinema cannot change the world, but it can give you another vision of life. I want people to see the world from the eyes of Sara (Laura Galán), the protagonist, and feeling what she felt and seeing what happens in the end, which is so terrible. I want people to think. If you make a short film about bullying, you have to leave people moved to generate debates. It's not about lecturing, it's about creating debate. Every day I receive messages from teenagers and people have liked it and I am very moved.

Where did they film it?

We shot it in the province of Cáceres [Spain] and it took us two and a half days to shoot.

How did you decide to work with Laura?

It took me two years to find the actress. I was preparing another short film, but the young actresses I was getting didn't have enough moral strength to do it. And what I didn't want is for it to become an unpleasant experience. Then I met Laura, who is 31 years old, and she understood from the first moment what she wanted to tell, how and why, and we had a great time. Since reading the script she said to me: 'I want to be me'.

We have all been bullied …

It is something that occurs everywhere and it is something you cannot escape. As a child she did not suffer bullying because she was bisexual because she was in the closet, but one of those obese children cannot escape, it is there for everyone to see, and it has to do with the aporophobia that is hatred and rejection of poor.

Why do you have to see it?

It will move them, they will have a great time and it will give them food for thought.
