Since she started her blog Chic Flavors more than two years ago, Soraya Hennessy, it was very clear that she wanted to publicize the culture of her country Venezuela and showcase the talent of its people. Thanks to her efforts and work, the Venezuelan influencer has not only become a well-known face on social networks, but also the designer of her own collection of bags Soraya Hennessy. We spoke with her so that she will tell us how she started with this project and the idea behind her designs.

Soraya tell me why you decided to start designing these bags …

I have been living in Abu Dhabi for more than two years and working on my fashion and travel blog, Chic Flavors. A very strong concern I have is to spread the culture of my country and do something positive for Venezuela. A very good idea to capture that concern was to make my indigenous race (Wayuu) known and globalized in every corner of the world where I can reach. As a result of that idea, I began to devise the way to design, with modern and updated touches, the backpacks in my collection.

What materials do you use and what do you get inspired to design them?

Soraya Hennessy uses the best quality crochet yarn, wool, [and] the best fabrics. Our backpacks stay firm and solid, and at the same time can be folded for travel without taking up too much space in your suitcase. The inspiration for this collection is my life between Abu Dhabi and Chicago, and my upbringing in Venezuela. Our [messenger] backpacks have hand-stitched words in Spanish, English and Arabic.

Why did you decide to use women from your country to help you in this project?

It would be much easier to make backpacks in Colombia and work with Colombian artisans, but that is not the message we want to share. My goal with Soraya Hennessy is to give Wayuu women work in Venezuela, who were not working before. [Now] everything will depend on the situation in Venezuela."

With everything that is happening in your country, we assume that making bags there now has another meaning …

It is an honor for me to represent Venezuela through my designs and backpacks. I want to give a positive message in these difficult times we are going through. Remind the world that Venezuela has talent, working women, and not everything is bad. Seeing Arab women, women in Paris, Luxembourg and the United States wearing our backpacks makes me very happy. Not only for the business, [but] because these women are taking a little piece of Venezuela around the world.

How far have your bags gone?

[We started] in August 2016 and since then we have expanded into the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Our backpacks are also for sale in Luxembourg. Aside from our website sorayahennessy.com, they [are] also available at Everythingbutwater.com [and] your store in the Hamptons. I have a lot of plans. The new collection will be released in January 2018. We will also introduce hammocks and beach coverups.
