The businesswoman and actress of Mexican origin Jessica Alba, who is part of our list of The most influential 2016, continues her commitment to the natural by expanding her line of Honest Beauty with different lines for hair care and styling.

Why did you decide to create a hair care line?

It was the natural evolution for the brand. I think what we use on our hair is as important as what we put on our skin, and there was a need in the market for safe products that really work. The principles are the same as for Honest Beauty. You shouldn't sacrifice efficiency for using products you trust.

What are you looking for in your hair products?

I don't have much time and I'm always on the go. Whether I am in the office or with my children all day [or] if I have a spontaneous appointment, I need products that work but do not require much effort; that they smell good and that they can transform me from day to night. I need products that keep my hairstyle up all day, from the office, to photo shoots, to the red carpet, without having to choose between looking good and feeling good.

How was the process of creating the line?

It all started with my vision of what products should be, from packaging and performance to how they look and smell. It was challenging to formulate with botanical ingredients and get the performance you expect from a conventional ingredient.

Afterwards, our R&D and product development team made a rigorous selection of ingredients, ensuring that they met Honest Beauty standards for safety and efficacy. Then we tested the products on real people, including our ambassador Jennifer Yepez, and myself.

What aspect of the products was really important to you?

The smell. When I was in Mexico with my family, our room was filled with essential oils of orange, myrrh, and bergamot. I was obsessed with how it smelled fresh, energizing and sensual, so I brought some of those oils to my team to inspire our formulas. Now every time I use the products it smells like a vacation!

What are your favorite products in the line?

My favorites are the Honestly Effortless Sea Salt Spray at the roots, and the Honestly Polished Dry Condition + Shine Serum at the tips. For the day to day I am faithful to the Beyond Hydrated line because it keeps my hair healthy. When I dye, I use the Truly Restored line.

Tell us how you get your famous beachy waves step by step

I use shampoo on the roots and conditioner on the rest of the hair. Outside of the shower, I towel-dry myself and spray with Moisture Milk Leave-In Conditioner, which is amazing. Then I use Honestly Uplifted Volumizing Spray and Honestly Effortless Sea Salt Spray. I give myself a pass of dryer. Next I take locks of different sizes and roll them in a curling iron, leaving the ends out. I do it in different directions so that the waves are messy and effortless.

What are your best hair care tips?

My head stylist, the incredibly talented ambassador for the Honest Beauty hair line, Jennifer Yepez, always gives me great advice. These are the ones that have been especially helpful to me: Use a quality shampoo and conditioner, apply shampoo only to the roots and conditioner to the ends, use leave-in conditioner every time you wash your hair and a mask once or twice a week and always use a thermal protector if you are going to use a styling tool.

What type of woman is Honest Beauty for?

Honest Beauty was created for the informed, connected and self-confident woman. At any age, she expects a lot from the products, that they really work, but she doesn't have much time to research and understand all the ingredients that are on the label. She worries about what she consumes and looks for brands she can trust.

Why is it so important to you that the products do not contain harmful ingredients?

I have always had really sensitive skin. I have allergies, and eczema, so I can't use a lot of the products on the market. I need things that won't irritate my skin. People are very aware of what they eat, but it is easy to forget that what we put on our skin is just as important. The skin is our largest organ, so it's super important to pay attention to the ingredients, but with so much information it can be very confusing. Who has time to spend hours researching your products? I wanted to simplify it for people, another reason why I was so passionate about creating the brand.
