Amelia Gapin just became the first transgender woman to be on the cover of Women's Running magazine.
The 33-year-old software engineer from Jersey City has finished seven marathons and co-founded MyTransHealth, an organization that helps connect trans people with doctors who understand trans healthcare.
Amelia won the fitness magazine's search contest for its July 2016 'Body Issue' and knows how monumental this is for the transgender community.
"For me to be on the cover of a women's magazine is kind of a sense of validation that other people are seeing transgender women as women," Gapin told People.
The special issue also highlights the difficulties transgender runners' face just to compete in the sport.
“It's important for Women's Running to show that there is not one definition of what a runner's body should be,” said the magazine's editor-in-chief, Jessica Sebor, in a press statement. “We are so grateful to Amelia for gracing the cover of our Body Issue. She is brave, beautiful, and wholly herself.”
Gapin recently underwent gender reassignment surgery to be able to compete in the Boston Marathon as a woman.
