A Hispanic family is living the "worst nightmare" due to the tragic death of their one-year-old twins who died after being forgotten by their father inside their car. The terrible incident that occurred this Friday in the Bronx has not only caused the deaths of the babies, but now the father faces serious accusations that could make him spend more than 15 years behind bars.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of a hospital in the aforementioned New York county where Juan Rodríguez, 39, was working as a social worker.

According to The New York Post newspaper, security cameras placed in the parking lot captured around 8:22 a.m. the moment the man arrives in his car, descends and drives away. The man returned to the car around 4 in the afternoon and drove away. According to himself, he later told the police he drove for about 10 minutes and when he was still in the Bronx, near the Kingsbridge Terrace neighborhood, he realized what had happened.

"I left them in the car!" The father began to shout when he saw his children Luna and Phoenix unconscious and with foam in their mouth, according to multiple local newspapers. When forensic doctors analyzed the infants' bodies, they realized that their internal temperature was 108 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the aforementioned newspaper. The children were still in their baby seats.

"I assumed that I had left them in the nursery before I went to work," the man explained to the police when questioned at the scene. “I went blank. My babies are dead! I killed my babies!”The man shouted between sobs.

Despite what happened, the family has described Rodríguez, who is a veteran of the Iraq war, as a "father of parents." A model man who dedicated himself body and soul to his three children. The oldest of them was traveling with her little brothers and her father the morning of the tragedy, but luckily she had been deposited in another daycare before the death of her brothers, according to the police report.

Rodríguez is now facing criminal negligence and involuntary manslaughter charges, which could lead to 4 and 15 years behind bars, respectively. The man was released after paying his bail half, which was set at 100,000, as confirmed by the Office of the Central Reserve Secretary of the Bronx Criminal Court to CNN.

Marissa Rodriguez, the suspect's wife, received him along with other family and friends after he was released and in a statement obtained by NBC the woman assured that she supports 100 percent her husband, who has pleaded not guilty for what happened.

"I will never be able to recover from this loss and I know that he will never forgive himself for this mistake," said the woman, who described what happens as "the worst tragedy." “Although I am suffering what I never imagined was possible, I still love my husband. He is a good person and a great father and I know that he would never do anything to intentionally hurt our children.”
