On the night of her defeat in the presidential election, Hillary Clinton had dramatic conversations with her former chief, President Barack Obama, who asked her to accept Donald Trump's unexpected triumph.

Some of the content of the calls are found in the new book Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign, by journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, which chronicles the candidacy of the former Secretary of State.

The tome, which went on sale on Tuesday, follows the drama that took place in the close fight for the White House between the Democrat Clinton and the Republican Trump in the polarized elections.

According to its authors, in the early hours of November 9 - once the AP news agency awarded Trump the victory - Clinton received a call from Obama, who was concerned that the former first lady might not recognize the victory of his rival and demanded a count.

"You need to acknowledge [defeat]," said the then president to the wife of former President Bill Clinton.

The president, who fervently supported Clinton during the presidential campaign, thought that the candidate should accept defeat "with dignity," the book states.

After calling Trump to offer his "congratulations" on the victory, Clinton called Obama again to apologize for his bitter defeat and jeopardize the legacy of the first African American president.

"Mr. President, I'm sorry," Clinton said, according to details of the book released in various newspapers.

The president also directly instructed Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta, to make sure Clinton accepted defeat as soon as possible, but he apparently ignored the request twice.

It was not until the following morning that the candidate appeared before the press to publicly acknowledge her defeat, although she had already called Trump at dawn to congratulate him.
